What counts as a pest emergency?
A pest emergency is anything that puts people or pets at risk or cannot wait: a stinging-insect nest by a door or play area, a sting-allergic person near a nest, rodents inside the living space, a venomous spider where children play, or an infestation threatening a business. Nuisance ants or a lone spider can usually wait for a regular visit.
If in doubt, call (855) 974-4733 and describe it. We will tell you whether it is urgent, and we would rather you call than guess.
If someone has been stung and has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or feels faint, call 911 right away. That is a medical emergency, not a pest call.
Are hornet and yellowjacket nests more of a problem in late summer?
UC IPM says yellowjacket colonies grow through summer, and defensiveness rises late in the season when colonies are largest and food is scarcer. In fall, workers scavenge at picnics, garbage cans, pet food and ripe fruit. In Sacramento, that means late summer and early fall are common times for urgent nest calls.
Yellowjackets nest in cavities, mostly in the ground but also in attics, wall voids and hollow trees. A hole in the lawn with steady traffic is often a nest, and mowing over it is a good way to get stung.
The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District, a public agency, performs yellow-jacket control from July through September, according to the Sacramento Local Agency Formation Commission. We are separate from the district. Our guide on yellowjackets in late summer covers the season in more detail.
What should I do about a rat in the house tonight?
Keep food sealed and pet food picked up, keep pets and children out of the area, and call. UC IPM says roof rats enter through any opening larger than a nickel and nest in attics, wall voids, ceiling voids and cabinets. A technician can come once the immediate problem is understood.
Do not corner the animal or try to handle it. Avoid poison placed in open areas, which can reach pets and children, and which can leave a dead rodent in a wall void.
UC IPM describes snap traps placed off the ground as the safest and most effective option for roof rats. Closing the entry point comes after the problem is under control, and our page on roof rats in Sacramento attics explains why they come in.
Will you come the same day?
Most calls are scheduled the same day when a technician is available, but we do not promise a same-day visit or an arrival time. The phone is answered 24/7, and we tell you honestly whether a technician can come quickly or whether it is better to book a time that fits.
The timing depends on the technician's schedule, the distance and the urgency of the problem. We prefer to give you a straight answer than a promise we cannot keep.
If your situation is dangerous, such as a person with a severe sting reaction, call 911 and then call us.
What should I tell you when I call?
Tell us where you are in Sacramento County or Yolo County, what you are seeing, where on the property it is and how close it is to people and pets. Mention any known sting allergy, whether the problem is indoors or outdoors, and whether a business is affected. That lets us judge urgency and match you with the right technician.
A photo can help the technician identify the pest, but only take one from a safe distance. Do not approach a nest or a cornered animal to get a better picture.
If you can safely note the time of day the activity is heaviest, say so. Wasp traffic and rodent noises often follow a pattern, and the pattern tells the technician where to look.
