Topic 1

Treatments & safety

How do I protect kids and pets during a treatment?

Products are applied according to their labels, and the technician explains the specific precautions for your household before the visit ends. Those can include where children and animals should stay while something dries and how long to keep them off a treated area. Ask for the precautions in writing if you want them on the service report.

How should I prepare for a visit?

Clear access to the area in question: the cabinet under the sink, the attic hatch, the garage wall or the side yard. Put away pet food and bowls, and note where and when you saw the pest. A short written list of sightings helps the technician find the source faster.

What is a bait station, and why use it for ants?

A bait station holds a slow-acting bait that workers carry back to the nest. UC IPM recommends liquid baits with 1 percent or less borate, with a dispenser on each side of the house at least 5 feet from nests, plus caulking, pruning plants back from the walls and sealing food.

Why use traps instead of scattering poison for roof rats?

UC IPM says snap traps placed off the ground are the safest and most effective option for roof rats. They keep the work where the rats travel, along beams and rafters, and avoid leaving loose product where pets or children could reach it.

What happens during a termite fumigation?

A tent of vinyl-coated nylon covers the structure and a gas such as sulfuryl fluoride is released. People and pets stay out from six hours to a week, according to UC IPM. California requires warning signs reading 'DANGER--FUMIGATION', an occupant notice, and no re-entry until the company posts the re-entry notice.

Topic 2

Pricing & plans

What does a one-time pest visit usually cost?

Typical national figures from Angi put an average one-time service at $200 to $600, and a one-time or annual service at $300 to $550. These are not Sacramento prices, and the technician confirms the actual price after the inspection. You approve it before treatment starts.

How much do ongoing plans cost?

According to Angi, a quarterly plan typically runs $100 to $300 per visit and a monthly plan $40 to $70 per visit. A plan helps most with pests that come back with the seasons. Ask what is covered between visits when the price is explained.

What does a termite inspection cost?

HomeGuide puts a termite inspection at $75 to $150 as a typical national range. California's report has its own rules about what is covered, so the termite inspection report page explains what you receive for the price.

Are there California-specific termite prices?

Fixr's California page lists termite treatment at $420 to $2,000, averaging $650, and tenting or fumigation at $1.30 to $4.35 per square foot. Its tentless treatment range is $3.36 to $18.40 per linear foot. These are published estimates, not quotes.

Why is there no single flat price for pest control?

The price depends on the pest, the size of the home, how much of it must be reached and how many visits the problem needs. Two houses with ants can need very different work. That is why the technician explains the price after inspecting and you approve it first.

Topic 3

Scheduling & service area

What should I tell the call line?

Give your ZIP, what you have seen and where, and when you last saw it. Mention whether it is a house, apartment or business, and whether anyone in the home has asthma or allergies. That helps the call line decide which service fits and how urgent it is.

Do you treat apartments and rentals?

Yes. Cockroaches and bed bugs are common in multi-unit housing, and UC IPM notes the allergen and asthma concern with German cockroaches in apartments. Tell the call line the building type, and sort out with your landlord who approves the price before treatment starts.

Do you work with restaurants, offices and warehouses?

Yes. Commercial pest control covers food-service businesses downtown and in Midtown, plus warehouses and industrial sites in places such as West Sacramento, McClellan Business Park and Rancho Cordova. The technician explains the price and visit pattern before you approve.

Can I request a quote without calling?

Yes. The form on the contact page suits things that can wait a day, such as a termite inspection or an ongoing ant plan. For stinging insects, rodents in the living space or anything urgent, calling is faster.

What if the pest comes back after a visit?

Call and describe what you are seeing. Some pests need more than one visit, and the written service report records what was done and where, which makes a follow-up faster. The technician can explain what to expect for your pest when the price is approved.

Topic 4

Sacramento pests & seasons

Are yellowjackets worse in fall?

UC IPM says colonies grow through summer and are largest, and most defensive, late in the season when food is scarcer. In fall, workers scavenge at picnics, garbage cans, pet food and ripe fruit. Queens start new nests each spring, so early-season nests are small.

Do roof rats nest only in attics?

No. UC IPM says they nest above ground in shrubs, trees and dense vegetation such as ivy, and in attics, wall voids, ceiling voids and cabinets. Residential areas with mature landscaping and riverbank vegetation are good habitat, which describes much of Sacramento.

Why are ground squirrels such a concern near levees?

UC IPM says their burrows run 5 to 30 feet long, 2.5 to 4 feet below the surface, and that tunnelling is the biggest threat to California levees. Homes beside open grass, parks and levee slopes in Natomas, West Sacramento and Vineyard are the usual call sites.

Are black widows common around Sacramento homes?

UC IPM names the western black widow as the main spider that can cause serious injury, and says it is common around homes, barns, outbuildings and rock walls. Sealing foundation cracks and gaps at windows and doors helps. See spider control for what the technician checks.

Why do I see roaches in a clean apartment?

UC IPM calls the German cockroach the most common and troublesome indoor roach in California. It is attracted to moist areas in kitchens and bathrooms and fits through gaps as narrow as 1/16 inch, so cleanliness in one unit does not keep roaches from moving in from another.

Topic 5

California rules & termite reports

Who regulates pest control in California?

The Structural Pest Control Board, part of the Department of Consumer Affairs, licenses structural pest work. The Sacramento County Agricultural Commissioner enforces pesticide law locally under the Department of Pesticide Regulation and registers pest-control businesses each year.

What are the three license branches?

Branch 1 is fumigation with poisonous or lethal gases. Branch 2 is general pest, which excludes fumigation. Branch 3 covers termites and other wood-destroying pests by insecticides or structural repairs, excluding fumigation. A license is limited to the branches a person qualified for by exam.

What does a termite inspection report cover?

A Wood Destroying Pests and Organisms Inspection Report records evidence of wood-destroying pests and organisms in visible and accessible areas, with recommendations for correcting problems. Findings are labelled categories such as Subterranean Termites, Drywood Termites, Fungus/Dryrot, Other Findings and Further Inspection.

What does 'Further Inspection' mean on a report?

It flags an area the inspector could not fully see or reach, such as window and door frames, decorative trim or roof members. It is not a finding of damage. Ask the company manager to explain any item, and the Board takes questions about reports at (800) 737-8188.

When is an inspection reported to the Board?

California law requires the address of each property inspected, or on which work is completed, to be reported on a Board form and filed within 10 business days after an inspection begins or work is completed. Failing to file can lead to discipline. The report guide has the details.
